The six-cylinder limousine 220 SE was first produced in 1959. The top-of-the-range model of the so-called tail-fin family offered impressive comfort. Its elegant linear bodywork created a stable passenger compartment and effective crumple zones. After the works withdrew Mercedes from the Formula 1 and Sports Car championships in 1956, private drivers continued to compete in motor sport with Mercedes-Benz cars in order to test the reliability of the production cars. Among these drivers was the Walter Schock - Rolf Moll team who decisively took the title of International and European Rally Masters in 1956. In 1960 the same combination was the first German team to win the challenging Monte Carlo Rally with great bravura for the first time in the 220 SE.
