The Jaguar E-Type was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, where its extravagant shape immediately appealed to the public. Shortly after that the Coventry works began to build the racing version of the car, which was about 25% lighter than the road variant, as indicated by its name the "light weight". Of the 12 E-Types made by the works, no less than 3 were owned by the American racing legend Briggs Cunningham, who used them all at LeMans in 1963. The car, starting with number 15 and driven by Bob Grossman and Briggs Cunningham himself, ran an outstanding race to finish in 9th place despite an accident.
